Advancing Infrastructure Through Research

Engineering Solutions. Research in the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program advances the planning, delivery, and management of infrastructure by addressing the engineering challenges that shape how infrastructure systems are conceived, delivered, operated, and sustained. Faculty and graduate students work together to develop practical solutions that improve infrastructure performance, resilience, sustainability, and decision-making while advancing civil engineering knowledge.

Integrated Expertise. VCEMP's research program brings together complementary faculty expertise in project delivery, infrastructure systems, and digital technologies to address complex infrastructure challenges from multiple perspectives. This integrated approach strengthens collaboration, expands interdisciplinary opportunities, and creates a cohesive research program focused on advancing infrastructure delivery and management.

Research with Impact. VCEMP research is supported by competitive funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Transportation Research Board (TRB), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and industry partners. Research outcomes advance civil engineering practice, inform public policy, improve infrastructure performance, and prepare graduate students to become the next generation of engineering researchers and leaders.

Infrastructure Delivery

Research Program

VCEMP's research program is organized around complementary research clusters that collectively advance the planning, delivery, and management of infrastructure. This coordinated structure promotes collaboration among faculty, aligns graduate research opportunities with strategic priorities, and strengthens the program's ability to pursue interdisciplinary and multi-investigator research initiatives. Together, these research clusters provide an integrated civil engineering perspective on the infrastructure systems that support society. This research architecture also reflects one of the program's strategic objectives: establishing a coherent and recognizable research program organized around complementary areas of expertise.

Project Delivery, Risk & Governance

Research examines project delivery methods, procurement, contracting strategies, governance, organizational performance, risk allocation, finance, and public-private partnerships to improve the delivery of complex infrastructure projects. Faculty investigate how engineering, policy, and organizational decision-making influence project outcomes throughout the infrastructure lifecycle.

Infrastructure Systems, Performance & Sustainability

Research focuses on improving the performance, resilience, sustainability, and long-term management of infrastructure systems. Areas of emphasis include infrastructure asset management, lifecycle performance, system resilience, engineering decision-making, and sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance long-term public value.

Digital & Smart Infrastructure

Research advances the application of sensing, automation, artificial intelligence, robotics, digital twins, building information modeling (BIM), and data analytics to improve infrastructure delivery, construction operations, and infrastructure management. Faculty and students explore how emerging technologies are transforming civil engineering practice across the built environment.
