The Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program is more than a graduate program—it is a community of students, faculty, alumni, and industry partners committed to advancing the civil engineering profession. VCEMP's collaborative community extends well beyond the classroom, connecting students with nationally recognized civil engineering leaders, complementary academic programs, fellow graduate students, alumni, and practicing professionals. Vecellio Distinguished Lecture: Each year, the Vecellio Distinguished Lecture brings nationally recognized leaders in infrastructure delivery and construction to Virginia Tech. Students engage directly with professionals whose experience spans complex infrastructure projects, engineering leadership, innovation, and public service, providing valuable perspectives on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of the profession.
Myers-Lawson School of Construction: Through VCEMP's partnership with the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, students become part of a broader construction community while maintaining the program's strong civil engineering foundation. Shared courses, seminars, networking events, career fairs, and student activities provide opportunities to collaborate with students and faculty from across the construction disciplines while expanding professional networks and interdisciplinary perspectives.
Graduate Student Council: The VCEMP Graduate Student Council (GSC) plays a central role in building the program's collaborative culture. Led by graduate students, the Council organizes professional and social activities throughout the year, including networking events, workshops, recreational outings, career development activities, and community-building events. The GSC also serves as an important liaison between students and faculty, ensuring that student perspectives contribute to the continued growth and success of the program.

Through initiatives such as the Myers-Lawson School of Construction Industry Advisory Council Graduate & Research Committee, industry leaders work with faculty to strengthen graduate education, expand research opportunities, and increase the visibility and impact of graduate study. These collaborative efforts help ensure that VCEMP remains responsive to the evolving needs of the construction industry.
One of the most distinctive traditions within VCEMP is the presentation of the VCEMP hard hat. More than a symbol of program completion, the hard hat recognizes students who have fully embraced the academic, professional, and community experiences that define the program. It reflects VCEMP's belief that leadership is developed not only through academic achievement but also through active engagement with the civil engineering profession and construction industry.
